I've taken leave from and even encouraged myself to be lazy about sewing, but when I sew things I find that it comes to be a truly unique venture into finding out what someone cares about. When I was in junior high I made my younger siblings costumes and pajamas and then created quilts and pillows and blankets and curtains. I made some clothes, but almost never for me because it felt nice to have the motivation to do it for someone else. I later ended up at a tailoring shop that I would have stayed with but the economic downturn made it impossible to do so. My latest venture has been my girlfriends. They are all wonderful unique people who are worth of a little sewn gift for themselves. Specifically a thought out personal no worries Garter Set presented to them a couple days before the wedding. I take serious pride in stepping away from their themes and colors and giving them gifts that represent them as couples and individuals.
My friend Danielle had her wedding it was a spectacular wedding that was perfect for her in every way. Her colors were Dark Red, Black, and Silver. I could have made a garter out of those colors but I chose not to because I had something much more personal in mind. I had an Idea and the first thing I did was brainstorm what would represent the couple. My answer was brilliant and unorthodox and completely fun and funky just like the bride: Daft Punk. That's right, the band Daft Punk. Not really a traditional garter theme but the catch? Her (now) Hubby had proposed to her with the lyrics from a daft punk song. I knew the first line but I wanted a little help so I called up the hubs and ask for input. He reminded me of the scene in the video where the two characters almost kiss. So what to do with this new found information? Researched and found a place online that would custom make one inch pin buttons with any image. So I found the image online and made sure it was high resolution and ordered my pin button! The next thing I did was do a little looking on the color scheme of Daft Punk and found that pretty much any color was good except white as long as it was bold and bright. My venture to the fabric store ended up in success with three printed fabrics: Black with multicolored hearts in bright neon rainbow colors, a medium pink with faint heart print and medium light blue with faint heart print. I also ended up with pink, orange, and yellow 1/8 ribbon and softest violet lace trim known to man. I made two garters, The for sure for keeps ended up using the lace, and pink fabric along with the black as the elastic casing and then the yellow and orange ribbon as decoration with the pin in the middle of the bow. The Toss garter was thinner and made from the blue and black material with all three colors of ribbon making a four loop bow and no center decoration. I presented her Garters to her the day before the wedding and she did get her Toss back, but sometimes you don't. Overall, The hubs got to help plan her garter, and as a better friend I got to make it for her and be part of the wedding. My cost: $15 but since she payed for my dress, hair, makeup, and hotel for the night it wasn't a lot.
Laura: My mind went blank and this one I am hoping to get pictures of in the process. So what do I do? Ask her sister! She of course had the answer that was staring me in the face the whole time: Dragons! She and her hubs to be love Dragons. I can't tell you how much they love dragons and ren faire themed things. So again I hit up Ebay and searched "Dragon buttons" it wasn't long before I came across an Amy Brown pin of a dragon in blue (her all time favorite color) So I ordered it and deleted all the other dragon pins from my watch list. The plan is to look for a dragon print brocade and then go from there. I can certainly combine whatever color brocade I find with the light blue dragon pin I found. I can probably even find a little heart pin to drop from both the garters to add a center charm to the toss garter.
Christine: Now this one is going to be a little tougher... I think I may make this one as nerdy as possible.... pokemon, harry potter, stargate, tron... I have six months to get this one done but I'm already thinking ahead, I may need to call the future hubs and see if he has any ideas.
Tara: No thoughts yet, but I certainly plan on making her Garter too. =D
